I am trying and trying in adobe photoshop CS to alter a picture of a house to put the illusion of something inside the house behind the window. i.e a Christmas tree.
I have tried to follow some online step by step guides, but they just aren't clear enough to follow when you are a relative beginner. I know it must be something to do with layering?
Please can you help?

Layering has to be done so for one the original image won't be ruined and because a lot of photoshops effects need a layer to work on.

Layer original. Layer second object. Mask window of original. Set as a transparency. Send second item to back. Flatten if wishing.
